You are embarking on a special journey, and I look forward to walking with you each step of the way. Counseling provides the opportunity for growth and self-discovery in the context of a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment.
Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the personalities of the therapist and client, and the particular problems you bring forward. Theoretically I most often think in terms of systems and I integrate marriage and family theories into treatment. I also utilize elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy. That means we may identify how your family of origin and other relationships impact your life, especially as it relates to your thoughts, feelings and actions. My approach is goal-oriented and strength based. We will collaboratively identify goals you want to meet, and then set out to achieve them.
Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. Since therapy often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. On the other hand, psychotherapy has been shown to have benefits for people who go through it. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress. There are no guarantees of what you will experience.
I look forward to walking on this journey with you. Let’s begin!
